General strike and demonstrations - In Nice, Toulon and 190 other cities across the country, demonstrations have been taking place today over government reforms to the retirement age. Unions were expecting around 15,000 protesters in Nice, from both the public and private sectors. Today’s mass marches co-incide with the day Parliament begins debating the pension reform bill. Schools, postal services, government offices and public transport are all being severely affected by the strike.
Traffic and travel - Local and intercity train services are operating on a skeleton schedule today because of the general strike – there are timetables up in local stations and on the website www.sncf.fr – services are due to return to normal tomorrow morning. There are no city buses or tram services today in Nice and the Nice to Monaco and Cannes intercity TAM buses could be slightly affected. Air travel is also subject to delays and cancellation, particularly on Air France – so the advice is to call the airline or to look at the website www.nice.aeroport.fr.
Var rape case - A Var court is due to hand out a verdict in a rape case involving a British woman who was sexually assaulted on a campsite in Agay in July as she slept in her caravan. A 26-year-old man from Normandy risks 15 years in prison if found guilty. After initially admitting robbery but denying rape, the suspect has reportedly confessed, after positive DNA test results.
Attempted murder in Hyeres - In Toulon, a man is in custody, awaiting trial for the attempted murder of a love-rival last Wednesday. The victim, a restaurant employee from Hyeres, suffered multiple gun-shot wounds and remains critically ill in intensive care. The suspect, a 50-year-old municipal worker, initially provided an alibi for his whereabouts at the time of the attack but police investigations found this to be false.
Local official dies in tree accident - In Saint-Martin-Vesubie yesterday, a municipal councilor was killed in an accident while chopping down a tree. The trunk fell onto 63-year-old Jose Fructueux from Utelle, propelling him over a 30-metre drop to his death.
Mandelieu boat fire - In Mandelieu hospital, a man and a woman from Paris are in a serious condition after a fire on a boat in La Napoule port yesterday – 2 other people in their 30s and 40s were also hurt in the blaze, which is thought to have started in the engine but did not damage the boat.
Drug crop destroyed - Gendarmes have uncovered a major drug crop in the Tinée Valley. 20 officers were involved in the operation, swooping from the air in a helicopter and descending on the inaccessible area by foot. They seized and destroyed more than 30 plants, measuring up to 1.5 metres.
Victim knew attacker - It is believed a man accused of killing a teenager may have known his victim. It was originally believed the 19-year-old died in a struggle after he was caught trying to steal a car at Cagnes early Sunday morning. However, it has been revealed he may have already known his attacker. It is believed he was killed with a golf club. A 31-year-old man is in custody.

The Gard on Red Weather Alert - Meteo France has placed 10 departments on a level 3 Orange Weather Alert until tomorrow morning, with heavy rain and storms expected from the Loire to the Bouches-du-Rhone. The neighbouring Gard department is on the highest Red Weather Alert, with warnings of dangerous conditions and extreme vigilance advised – schools in the region have been closed.
Michael Youn in custody - The comedian, Michael Youn, was arrested last night in Paris after being caught driving on the wrong side of a road in the 18th arrondissement on his scooter. He was taken into custody after an allegedly violent row with officers, during which it’s reported a policeman was injured when Mr Youn slammed a police car door onto his arm.
Sarkozy nationality vow - President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to strip French nationality from immigrants if they kill or try to kill police or public officials, as part of a controversial law and order drive. Defying both an international outcry over his targeting of foreigners and claims he is pandering to Far-Right voters, Sarkozy expressed determination to push ahead with a tough crackdown on foreign-born criminals; but he dropped a threat to strip foreign-born Frenchmen of their citizenship if they are convicted of polygamy. Instead, rules will be tightened to prevent them claiming welfare benefits for multiple wives.
Eurotunnel’s best summer - The Eurotunnel group which manages and operates the Channel Tunnel between Great Britain and France has recorded a 17 per cent increase in tourism traffic for the months of July and August. This summer was the sharpest increase in traffic the company has ever seen. Eurotunnel says it has transported 533,238 cars, motorcycles and camper vans between Calais and Kent during the 2-month period.
Frenchman sex charges - A 61-year-old Frenchman has been on trial in Paris, charged with raping or sexually assaulting 10 Thai girls aged between 6 and 11. Jean-Claude Chamoux was arrested when police burst into his hotel room in the Thai resort of Pattaya in 2005, after he raped an 8-year-old girl to whose mother he had paid 20 euros, court documents alleged.

President Barack Obama has called for a new comprehensive infrastructure plan as part of efforts to jump-start the spluttering US economy. The plan will invest about $50bn in roads, railways and airports as well as high-speed rail and the creation of an infrastructure bank. US infrastructure has long been considered underfunded and receives poor grades from government agencies. The move comes amid signs that the US economy is faltering.

Tennis - Roger Federer has breezed into the quarter finals of the U.S Open at Flushing Meadows with a straight-sets win over Jurgen Melzer. Apart from some good fortune in the second set tie-break the 5 time champion never looked in trouble against the number 13 seed and will now go on to play the number 5 seed Robin Soderling in the last 8. The number 3 seed Novak Djokovic is also through following a straight-sets win over Mardy Fish. He’ll now play Gael Monfils who becomes the first Frenchman to reach the last 8 of the U.S Open in 10 years after beating Richard Gasquet in straight sets.
In the women’s event-Top seed Caroline Wozniacki was too good for Maria Sharapova, reaching the quarter finals with a 6-3 6-4 win. She’ll now play Dominika Cibulkova who beat Svetlana Kuznetzova 7-5 7-6.
Football - Wayne Rooney looks set to start for England against Switzerland tonight and a familiar face is set to make a re-appearance in the Premiership.
Also in Euro 2012 qualifying action tonight -Scotland who have a home game against Liechtenstein in Group I and the Republic of Ireland who play Andorra in Dublin in Group B. France are away in Bosnia-Hercegovina in Group D after having lost their opening match at home to Belarus.
Cricket - England are looking for their 7th consecutive Twenty20 victory and a 2-0 series win when they play Pakistan in Cardiff at 7pm French time this evening. The weather could be a problem with critics saying that it’s the wrong venue to be playing a floodlit Twenty20 in September. England won the first match by 5 wickets.
Golf - Tiger Woods will find out later today whether he’s made the United States Ryder Cup team to play Europe at Celtic Manor next month. The world number 1 has missed out on one of the 8 automatic qualifying spots but hopes to be handed a wild card spot by captain Corey Pavin.

Britain's tabloid Sun newspaper launched its own celebrity perfume on Monday to provide readers with the scent of showbiz. Buzz, marketed as the "essence of pure entertainment" was created in collaboration with parfumier Roja Dove, who strove to mix the style of TV's Sarah-Jessica Parker, the charisma of film siren Sophia Loren, the intoxicating sass of actor/singer Beyonce Knowles and the girl-next-door charm of Cheryl Cole. Dove told Reuters that what he loves about the perfume is its hoped-for universal appeal to princesses and paupers looking for that Hollywood red carpet feeling.
