Evening Update Monday 2 September

A woman in her eighties has drowned earlier today after suffering a heart attack. She was swimming in an unsupervised area on the border of Cagnes-sur-Mer and Saint-Laurent-du-Var. Several other swimmers came to the woman's rescue and brought her back to the beach. Firefighters provided resuscitation but were not able to revive her.

Five people have appeared before a magistrate in connection with the fatal shootings at a service station in Ollioules in the Var on the 28th of July. Nine people had been arrested last week but four were released. Two men died in the incident, which is thought to be a settler of accounts between drug traffickers, and a 58 year old tourist who was nearby.

The body of a man has been found in St. Lawrence of Var this morning. The man in his seventies lived on a boat moored in the port. His family apparently raised the alarm when they were unable to contact him.

The robbery at the NICT shopping center in October 2016. The robbers entered the shopping center on a motorcycle and scooter and smashed store windows before stealing jewelery. The three men were arrested three weeks later.

There have been protests by teachers in Grasse today as students return for the new school year. Teaching Unions have called for action later this month. Teachers are protesting at changes to the Baccalaureate exam and at staffing levels. Meanwhile, there are also protests in the Rouret, where about 100 parents are gathered to protest at overcrowded classes.

A hiker from Antibes has died after suffering a fall of 15 meters. The man had been hiking with his wife in Tourrettes-sur-Loup yesterday afternoon. The gendarmerie helicopter was used to locate the man's body in an inaccessible area.


BUSINESS

A new survey suggests that activity in the UK's manufacturing sector contracted for the fastest pace for seven years last month. The survey of purchasing managers fell to 47.4 in August, down from 48 in July. A figure below 50 indicates the sector is contracting. Eurotunnel has said that it has been working with the UK and its governments on the provision of services after the current Brexit date of 31 October. It says that for the passengers and the passengers through the tunnel, there will be no change to the formalities they pass through at present. Football ... Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has joined Italian side Parma on a four-year deal. The 29-year-old previously played for Torino.

Roma have signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal. There will be no option or option to buy the Armenia International. He's scored nine goals in 59 appearances for Arsenal.

Rugby Union ... Devin Toner has been left of Ireland's 31-man squad for Rugby World Cup in Japan. The 33-year-old had previously made 60 appearances for the team. Ulster back Will Addison is also left out of the final selection.
