Evening Update Tuesday 2 July

Travellers with about 100 caravans have arrived in Frejus this morning. The arrival of the convoy was apparently not expected and traffic disruption was caused in the centre of Frejus and along the coast. Authorities have been negotiating with the travellers with the aim of accommodating the caravans on the area of La Palissade in Frejus.

A man who was seriously hurt in a fairground accident in the Var at the weekend has died from his injuries. The man was trying to retrieve a cap dropped by a customer on a carousel when he was struck by a cart on the ride weighing 800kg. The body of the man, who was in his thirties, will be repatriated to his home country of Romania.

Traffic was disrupted in the centre of Cagnes-sur-Mer this afternoon after a gas leak. It’s thought that a gas pipe may have been ruptured by workmen. A 200 metre exclusion zone was established, repairs were carried out and the incident was over by mid-afternoon.

A woman has been airlifted to hospital after being struck by a car in Saint-Maximin. A dozen pompiers were in attendance and the 55 year old woman was taken to Sainte-Anne Hospital in Toulon by helicopter. Her life is not thought to be in danger.

Over 15 hectares of scrubland caught fire today in Chateaudouble in the Var. Three water bombing aircraft have been used to try to control the fire, near the military barracks in the town.

The village of Sainte-Agnès has failed in its attempt to stop the opening of a centre for migrants.  The village had applied to the administrative court for the suspension of an order by the Prefect requisitioning a former leisure centre for migrant housing, but the court has dismissed the request.

Amazon has announced that it will be recruiting 1,800 employees in France by the end of this year.  Reports say that the new posts will be permanent contracts. Amazon has 20 sites in France and after the recruitment drive will have 9,300 employees in France, including the new employees.


BUSINESS

The UK construction sector appears to have contracted in June. The Markit/CIPS UK Construction purchasing managers' index  recorded a reading of 43.1 for June, down from 48.6 in May. A figure below 50 indicates contraction.

Ryanair says that group traffic, which also includes the Lauda airline, grew by 13% in June compared with the same month a year ago. Ryanair carried a total of 14.2 million passengers, up from 12.6 million.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has once again cut its key policy rate at its July meeting. The rate now stands at 1%. The reduction comes a month after it eased monetary policy for the first time in three years,

Young's Seafood has been acquired by pork processing company Karro Food Group. CapVest, the owner of Karro said that the combined business will have sales of around £1.2bn and employ more than 5,000 people across the UK and Ireland.

French cosmetics company L’Oréal is buying the Mugler and Azzaro perfume brands from Clarins. No financial details of the transaction have been made public.

 

SPORT

Cricket…. India are playing Bangladesh at Edgebaston. India won the toss and decided to bat and were 314 for 9 at the end of their innings.

Tennis….It’s the second day of Wimbledon, with many British players on court today. Harriet Dart, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans are through to the next round. Dart beat Christina McHale 4-6  6-4  6-4. British number three Evans beat Federico Delbonis. Norrie beat Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-2  6-4  6-4. Meanwhile, world number one Ashleigh Barty and defending champion Angelique Kerber are both through to the second round.

Cycling...It appears that Mark Cavendish will not ride in the Tour de France for the first time since 2007 after Team Dimension Data left him out of their squad. The 34-year-old has struggled with illness since being diagnosed with the Epsten-Barr virus just over 2 years ago. This year's Tour de France starts in Brussels this coming Saturday.

Football …. Manchester United have reportedly made a £70m bid for Leicester defender Harry Maguire. He signed a 5 year contract with Leicester just last September. Meanwhile, Tottenham have signed Leeds United winger Jack Clarke and immediately loaned him back to Leeds for the coming season. Clarke is Spurs' first signing since Lucas Moura joined from Paris St-Germain in January 2018.

Baseball...The Los Angeles Angels have confirmed the death of their 27 year old pitcher Tyler Skaggs. The announcement came just hours before they were scheduled to play against the Texas Rangers. Police said he was found unconscious in his hotel room in Texas yesterday afternoon. The game has been cancelled.
