A level one air pollution alert has been issued across the Alpes-Maritimes for Thursday after a cloud of desert dust particles drifted over France, pushing fine particle levels higher across the region.

Authorities warned air quality could become difficult for vulnerable people, with the daily pollution threshold at risk of being exceeded.

Speed limits have been temporarily reduced by 20km/h, while residents are being urged to limit car use, avoid non-essential travel and postpone gardening or maintenance work using fuel-powered equipment.

People with respiratory conditions are advised to reduce strenuous outdoor activity and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
