Qualifying for the Australian Open tennis tournament is under way in Melbourne.

Players compete for a place in the main draw of the season’s first Grand Slam.

Among those in action are French players Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Harold Mayot, who are both hoping to progress through the qualifying rounds.

Meanwhile, Italy’s Jannik Sinner is the defending men’s champion at the tournament, returning to Melbourne to defend his title as the main draw approaches.
