From eveningwear requirements to selfie bans, festival-goers are expected to follow a long list of rules if they want to make it up the Palais steps without being stopped by security.

For gala screenings, formal dress is essential, with tuxedos, dark suits and long gowns strongly encouraged.

Elegant shoes are accepted with or without heels, although trainers remain strictly forbidden.

Guests are also banned from taking selfies on the red carpet - a rule introduced to keep crowds moving and avoid delays before screenings.

Standing still for too long is discouraged, with security staff quick to usher attendees towards the entrance.

Large bags are not permitted, overly revealing outfits and dramatic trains are frowned upon, and once on the carpet, guests cannot turn back or walk against the flow.

Timing is equally important.

Latecomers risk missing the screening entirely, while the final moments before a premiere are reserved exclusively for stars and film talent.

The Festival also bans political demonstrations, promotional stunts and unofficial ticket sales, reinforcing the tightly controlled atmosphere surrounding one of cinema’s most iconic traditions.
