The Iranian director, already celebrated in Cannes for The Salesman and The Past, returned to the Festival with a French-language drama filmed entirely in Paris and featuring some of French cinema’s biggest names, including Isabelle Huppert, Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney and Catherine Deneuve.
Their arrival on the red carpet quickly became one of the standout moments of the festival so far, despite the windy weather sweeping across the Croisette.
At the centre of Parallel Tales is Sylvie, played by Isabelle Huppert, a solitary writer who becomes fascinated by the lives of three neighbours working on wildlife documentary soundtracks in a Paris apartment opposite hers.
As fiction and reality begin to blur, the film explores obsession, imagination and human relationships in the layered style that has become Farhadi’s trademark.
Speaking ahead of the screening, Virginie Efira described the film as one likely to “spark a lot of reactions,” while Isabelle Huppert admitted the story leaves room for multiple interpretations.
“It’s not a straightforward film,” the actress explained before walking the famous Cannes steps for the 22nd time in her career - a festival record.
Alongside the film itself, the evening also became a fashion highlight of this 79th edition.
Catherine Deneuve, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, India Hair and Adam Bessa all joined the glamorous premiere, drawing huge crowds and photographers outside the Palais des Festivals.
Particular attention was once again focused on Pierre Niney and his partner Natasha Andrews, who have become one of Cannes’ most stylish couples over the years.
Their appearances on the Croisette have repeatedly turned heads thanks to their effortless elegance and understated chemistry, from their first Cannes red carpet together in 2014 to their more recent standout appearances during The Count of Monte Cristo and Masquerade premieres.
With Parallel Tales now officially entering the Palme d’Or competition, the festival continues to intensify as Cannes settles fully into its second week of premieres, glamour and awards speculation.
