Temperatures are set to dip below freezing in the Haut-Var and inland areas, with overnight lows of between –2°C and –4°C expected through to early January.

Along the coast, however, the Mediterranean will keep conditions milder, with night-time temperatures remaining above zero and daytime highs of around 9°C to 12°C.

Motorists are being warned of a risk of ice during the night of New Year’s Eve and into New Year’s Day, particularly on inland roads.

No significant snowfall is forecast, with snow limited to higher ground in the surrounding mountain ranges.

Overall, forecasters describe the episode as a typical winter cold snap, most noticeable away from the coast, rather than an exceptional weather event.
