From 8am today, the SS1 Aurelia will be closed in both directions between the Latte roundabout and the Ponte San Ludovico border crossing.

The closure, linked to renovation and safety works on the Dogana and Balzi Rossi tunnels, is due to last until 12 May 2026 and is being overseen by Italy’s road authority, Anas.

Heavy goods vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes will be strictly banned from using the affected section and will be required to use the motorway, with no exemptions other than for emergency services, public transport and certain maintenance vehicles.

Light vehicles will still be able to cross the border via alternative routes, but drivers are strongly advised to plan ahead, expect delays and use the motorway where possible, particularly at peak times.

Special traffic measures are expected to be introduced during major events, including Menton’s Lemon Festival in February, to help maintain access to the town.

Authorities on both sides of the border have urged motorists to follow signage closely, as traffic arrangements may change depending on conditions.
