Motorists planning long journeys in France this weekend are being warned to expect heavy traffic, with the country’s roads watchdog Bison Futé issuing its highest-level warnings for Friday and Saturday.

The Assumption public holiday falls on Saturday, August 15, traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the summer.
Holidaymakers returning from coastal resorts are expected to cause particularly severe congestion on major routes.
Friday is forecast to be especially difficult on the A10 between Bordeaux and Tours, the A7 through the Rhône Valley, the A8 towards the Italian border and routes around Lyon.
Bison Futé also advises avoiding the A61 between Carcassonne and Narbonne and the A9 between Spain and Nîmes at peak times.
Saturday is expected to be the busiest day nationwide, with red warnings in both directions.
Heavy traffic is forecast on the A10 between Bordeaux and Tours, the A7 between Marseille and Lyon, and the A9 from Spain towards Orange.
Conditions are expected to remain difficult on Sunday and Monday, particularly on routes between the Mediterranean and Paris, as well as around Lyon and across the south-west.
Drivers are advised to check the latest Bison Futé traffic information before setting off and, where possible, travel outside the busiest periods.
The weekend could also be affected by industrial action by easyJet cabin crew.
