The 53-year-old star, best known for Luther and The Wire, received the honour after years of supporting youth initiatives, including through the Elba Hope Foundation.
Sir Idris has also spoken about the support he received from the King’s Trust, which helped launch his career as a teenager.
Olympic ice dancing legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were also recognised, receiving a damehood and knighthood respectively for their contributions to ice skating and voluntary service.
The pair, who won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics, retired from performing together last year.
Meanwhile, actress, writer and comedian Meera Syal was made a Dame for services to literature, drama and charity.
The Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42 star has long supported a number of charitable causes, including dementia awareness.
Also honoured was comedian Paul Elliott, better known as Paul Chuckle, who received an MBE for his charitable work with Marie Curie.
