Unauthorised fireworks were launched over the Promenade des Anglais shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, just after commemorative ceremonies marking the tenth anniversary of the 2016 Nice terror attack had concluded.

Earlier in the evening, a drone display and 86 beams of light illuminated the sky in tribute to the 86 people killed in the attack on 14 July 2016.

No official fireworks display has been held in Nice on Bastille Day since the attack, as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.

The source of the unauthorised fireworks has not been identified, and authorities have not yet released any information about those responsible.

The incident came moments after the city’s remembrance events had ended, contrasting sharply with the solemn tone of the commemorations.
