A spokesperson said Rollins died at his home in Woodstock, New York, on Monday after suffering from a number of health problems in recent years.
Known as the “saxophone colossus”, Rollins was regarded alongside John Coltrane and Charlie Parker as one of jazz’s defining musicians.
During a career spanning more than 70 years, he released over 60 albums and also collaborated with The Rolling Stoneson their 1981 album Tattoo You.
Rollins won two Grammy Awards and was presented with the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2011.
He retired from performing in 2012 after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.
