Filing a déclaration des revenus is mandatory for most people living in France, and missing the deadline can result in penalties or additional charges.
For 2026, the cut-off dates vary depending on how and where you file:
- 19 May: deadline for paper declarations
- 21 May (11:59pm): online filing for those in départements 1 to 19, and residents living abroad
- 28 May (11:59pm): online filing for départements 20 to 54
- 4 June (11:59pm): online filing for départements 55 to 96 and overseas territories
After submissions are completed, the French tax authority, Direction générale des Finances publiques, will calculate each taxpayer’s final bill.
Tax assessments (avis d’impôt) are typically issued between late July and early August.
Those filing online can access their assessment directly via their personal account.
Depending on individual circumstances, taxpayers may either need to pay additional tax or receive a refund credited to their bank account.
Officials are urging residents to check their deadlines carefully and submit on time to avoid unnecessary fines.
