The Oscar-winning actress, attending the premiere of Karma, reacted instinctively with a cry of pain that was caught on camera and quickly spread across social media.
The visibly distressed fan became emotional after realising what had happened.
Guillaume Canet, who directed the film and was accompanying Cotillard, stepped in to reassure the fan before encouraging the actress to calm her.
Cotillard then returned to hug the young woman, repeatedly telling her not to worry and insisting that “these things happen”.
While some online commentators criticised the actress’s initial reaction, many others defended her, pointing out that it was simply a reflex after being hurt.
The clip has since sparked a wave of amused reactions online, with several fans joking that stepping on Cotillard’s foot might be “the secret to getting a hug from her”.
