Futures for the Euro Stoxx 50 fell by more than 1 percent, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.8 percent, reflecting a more cautious mood among investors.
The currency markets also reacted, with the US dollar weakening overall.
It recorded its biggest losses against the Swiss franc and the Japanese yen as traders moved into traditionally safer currencies.
