The 17th edition of the initiative was celebrated on Tuesday 14 April at the Saint-James Garden, bringing together local families, municipal officials and representatives from the Société des Bains de Mer, which supported this year’s event.
A symbolic carob tree (a Mediterranean species known for its resilience) was planted during the ceremony, highlighting the programme’s growing focus on sustainability and climate adaptation.
Launched in 2008, the initiative is based on a simple idea: each birth in the Principality is matched by the planting of a tree, creating a lasting connection between generations and nature.
The trees are planted in the Alpes-Maritimes, notably in the Saint-Auban area, contributing to reforestation efforts beyond Monaco’s borders.
Over time, the programme has evolved to reflect changing environmental challenges.
Since 2020, it has been integrated into the “Îlot d’Avenir” project, which promotes the use of more climate-resilient species and aims to develop sustainable reforestation models for the wider Mediterranean region.
To date, the initiative has resulted in the planting of over 15,000 trees, making it a key part of Monaco’s contribution to the global “Plant for the Planet” campaign, supported by Prince Albert II.
Beyond its environmental impact, the programme also carries strong symbolic value, offering families a way to mark each birth with a lasting, positive gesture for the future.
