During the ceremony, Berro-Amadeï underlined the importance of preserving the memory of the victims while remaining vigilant against hatred, racism, antisemitism, anti-Gypsyism, discrimination and the normalisation of exclusion.
She said remembrance is essential to protecting peace and upholding Europe's democratic values.
She also reaffirmed the Council of Europe's commitment to Holocaust education, combating Holocaust denial, preserving memorial sites and recognising the genocide of the Roma and Sinti people.
As part of the visit, the Minister met with young Roma and Sinti representatives and Holocaust survivors to discuss the importance of passing on the memory of these events to future generations.
European Roma and Sinti Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates the night of 2–3 August 1944, when more than 4,300 Roma and Sinti men, women and children were murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
The massacre has become a symbol of the genocide in which up to 500,000 Roma and Sinti were persecuted and killed by the Nazi regime.
