Five emergency vehicles were deployed to the school on Boulevard Victor-Hugo, alongside GRDF technicians and municipal police officers, who established a safety perimeter.
Emergency services carried out checks using detection equipment to determine the source of the smell and rule out any danger.
The incident was eventually traced to a minor fault with a water heater in the school kitchen.
Once the building had been made safe, pupils and staff were able to return to their classrooms.
