The six-storey townhouse, built around 1730, was once part of Victorian bohemian London as a boarding house for ambitious young men, hosting tenants like Hugh Walpole, Siegfried Sassoon, and Raoul “Reggie” de Veulle.

Wilde’s lover, journalist Robbie Ross, lived nearby, and Wilde himself frequented the house, using it as inspiration for Algernon Moncrieff’s bachelor pad in the play.

The 5,000+ sq. ft. residence spans seven floors, all served by a private lift, and features five bedrooms, each with ensuite bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Luxury amenities include a cinema, gym, steam room, storage vault, and terraces.

The principal suite boasts a freestanding sculptural bathtub and Armani marble double walk-in shower.

Public areas include a marble-floored entrance hall, open-plan kitchen, reception room with bay window and cocktail bar, drawing room, and 10-seater dining room—the latter reflecting Wilde’s play, where Jack Worthing proposes to Gwendolen Fairfax.

Converted to offices after WWII, the property returned to single-residence use in 2008 and was bought in 2016 by an Emirati multi-millionaire as a student residence for his daughter.

Luxuriously refurbished, the townhouse blends historical charm with modern comforts while remaining closely tied to Wilde’s literary legacy.

Jeremy Gee of Beauchamp Estates notes its allure: “With its links to Oscar Wilde and The Importance of Being Earnest, this is one of the most famous townhouses in Mayfair, attracting discerning buyers worldwide.”
