Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene join Nice in tribute to victims of the 2016 attack

The ceremony in Place Masséna paid tribute to the 86 people who lost their lives when a terrorist drove a truck through crowds celebrating Bastille Day, leaving hundreds more injured and thousands traumatised.

The Princely couple arrived alongside Nice Mayor Éric Ciotti and were welcomed to the official stand, joining President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron, former presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande, government ministers, local officials and around 2,500 members of the public.

The commemorations opened with a film reflecting on the tragedy, followed by a reading of Lamartine's L'Isolement and a musical tribute by renowned cellist Gautier Capuçon.

The ceremony then saw 43 children accompanied by 43 first responders enter the square before 86 empty chairs, each representing one of the victims, received an olive branch.

The Patrouille de France flew over Nice in the colours of the French flag before a minute's silence was observed.

Speeches were then delivered by representatives of the victims' families, Mayor Éric Ciotti and President Emmanuel Macron.

The official ceremony concluded with performances of La Marseillaise and Nissa la Bella, the city's traditional anthem, sung by the Nice Opera Choir.

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene have attended previous commemorations of the attack and once again stood alongside the victims' families and French officials to honour those who lost their lives and reaffirm the Principality's solidarity with its neighbouring city.
