Unveiled during Commonwealth Day events in London, the collaboration will support projects through the Commonwealth Blue Charter Project Incubator, a programme that helps countries develop early-stage initiatives focused on protecting marine ecosystems.
Funding for new conservation projects
Through the Incubator, projects can receive grants of up to £50,000 to support solutions in key areas such as reducing marine pollution, restoring ecosystems, promoting sustainable fisheries and developing the blue economy.
The Prince Albert II Foundation will focus its support on Asia and Pacific nations, regions already facing significant challenges from rising sea levels and climate change.
Supporting global ocean commitments
The initiative also contributes to the goals of the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration, adopted by Commonwealth leaders in Samoa in 2024, which calls for stronger global action to protect and sustainably manage the oceans.
Around one third of the world’s ocean under national jurisdiction lies within Commonwealth countries.
Organisers say the programme is designed to encourage cooperation between governments, scientists, civil society groups and local communities, while placing particular emphasis on the involvement of Indigenous peoples, youth and marginalised communities in ocean governance.
The next call for funding applications through the Blue Charter Project Incubator is expected to open later this year.
