Prince Albert joins Olympic leaders in Milan as Winter Games countdown begins

Prince Albert II of Monaco has joined senior Olympic figures in Milan as preparations enter the final days before the opening of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The prince attended the opening of the 145th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session at Teatro alla Scala on Monday, ahead of Thursday’s opening ceremony at San Siro stadium.

The gathering brought together Olympic leaders to mark the start of the Milano Cortina 2026 Games.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and IOC president Kirsty Coventry addressed the session, highlighting the unifying role of sport and the Olympic values of peace, respect and excellence.

The event marks the first Winter Games under Coventry’s presidency.Running from 6 to 22 February, the Games will feature more than 3,500 athletes from 93 countries competing across 16 disciplines.

Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo will co-host the event, with competitions spread across 15 venues.

A long-time IOC member and former Olympic bobsleigh competitor, Prince Albert has represented Monaco at five Winter Games and continues his family’s long association with the Olympic movement.
