Historian and lecturer Neal Doherty will lead the presentation, focusing on County Mayo, where Princess Grace’s grandfather was born before emigrating to the United States in the late 19th century.

The visual talk will explore why John Henry Kelly left Ireland during a time of famine and severe poverty, as well as the dangerous journeys faced by many Irish emigrants on so-called “coffin ships”.

The event will also highlight Monaco’s links to Mayo, including visits by Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III in 1961, and more recent trips by Prince Albert II, who unveiled a statue honouring his mother in Newport in 2023.

Tickets cost €10, with a reduced €5 rate for students, and can be booked online or via the library.
