The latest Marvel film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, is second only to Avengers: Endgame, which opened with more than $1.2 billion worldwide in 2019.
The film also recorded the second-highest opening weekend ever in North America, taking in $355 million, just behind Endgame.
Internationally, the film grossed $572 million, with China leading overseas markets at $121 million, while the UK contributed $49 million over the opening weekend.
Set a few years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, the new film follows Peter Parker as he continues fighting crime in a world that no longer remembers his identity.
The latest instalment has received strong reviews, with many critics praising Holland's performance and audiences responding positively to the story's themes of friendship, loneliness and human connection.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described the opening as "truly phenomenal" and thanked audiences for experiencing the film on the big screen.
The blockbuster success provides a major boost for Marvel ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday later this year, following a mixed run for several recent Marvel films.
It also continues a strong summer for cinemas, with hits including The Odyssey and Toy Story 5 helping push the North American box office towards its strongest performance since before the pandemic.
Industry analysts say the combination of positive reviews, one of Marvel's most popular characters and renewed enthusiasm for cinema has helped make Spider-Man: Brand New Day one of the biggest film launches in history.
