Now marking its 130th anniversary, the vessel was once again moored in the heart of Marseille, where it drew attention for its strong symbolic link to the city and its maritime heritage.

The ship is berthed at Quai de la Fraternité and will open its decks to the public this weekend, offering visitors the chance to explore what is often described as a floating museum.

Organisers say it is a rare opportunity to step aboard one of France’s most iconic sailing ships.

Access will be available on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm, with tickets priced at €9 for adults and €6 for children aged 6 to 12.

Advance booking is recommended, although tickets will also be sold on site.

The Belem is scheduled to depart again on 11 May, heading for Alicante in Spain, continuing its ongoing programme of international voyages and public exhibitions.
