The body of the person swept out to sea found - The body of the person reported missing after heavy rainfall hit the Var region overnight has been found. The victim had been swept out to sea while at the wheel of her vehicle as the banks of the River Garonnette in Saint Maxime rose rapidly due to heavy rainfall. The Var has been particular badly hit with one month’s worth of rain falling in just a few hours. In the town of Sainte-Maxime four people have been rescued by helicopter from a roof and the city council has reported significant material damage with villas, cellars and ground floors of buildings flooded. At 3am this morning firefighters in the Var had already intervened 202 times. In the Alpes Maritimes firefighters intervened 30 times during the night. Authorities have also warned of the risk of pollution after a fuel tanker was washed away near Plan de la Tour. The Prefect of the Var Jean-Luc Videlaine has warned that there could be more victims as a result of the bad weather which has hit the region over the last 24 hours.
