The deterioration follows more than a week of hot, sunny weather along the Côte d’Azur, with temperatures close to 30°C.
Forecasters say stormy showers could begin in northern parts of the department on Monday evening before spreading across the region on Tuesday.
The yellow thunderstorm alert is expected to be in force from 1pm to 6pm, with lightning and heavy downpours possible throughout the Alpes-Maritimes, including Nice.
Conditions are expected to improve later in the evening, with sunshine forecast to return on Wednesday.
The warning comes as southern France experiences a shift to cooler and more unsettled weather following the recent early-summer heatwave.
