Hail was forecast across much of the inland region, including areas between Menton, Puget-Théniers and Tende, while coastal towns such as Nice and Antibes were expected to avoid the worst of the hail.
However, thunderstorms and heavy showers were forecast across the entire department, with lightning expected to affect the coast into the evening.
Forecasters said the unsettled weather would ease overnight before sunshine returns on Friday.
Despite the storms, the Alpes-Maritimes remains under a separate yellow heatwave alert, with little change expected in temperatures.
