The Var department recorded France's highest temperature on Thursday, with 41°C measured in the village of Les Mayons on the edge of the Maures Massif, despite cooler conditions reaching other parts of the country.

The department remains under an orange heatwave alert, with inland areas including Le Luc reaching 40.5°C.
High humidity has made conditions feel even more oppressive, while coastal towns such as Toulon, Hyères and Fréjus also experienced temperatures above 30°C.
Forecasters expect another day of extreme heat on Friday before temperatures remain high over the weekend.
Authorities have also warned of an exceptional wildfire risk across the Mediterranean region, as prolonged hot and dry weather continues to leave vegetation dangerously parched.
