Detergents and runoff water can harm ecosystems, and most local regulations ban car washing on public roads or areas where water may reach drains.

In serious pollution cases, penalties can rise to €75,000 and even prison under environmental law. While not always explicitly banned on private property, drivers can still be fined if there is any risk of contamination.

Authorities advise using professional car washes or taking precautions to prevent runoff.
