Zidane, who rarely speaks publicly about his personal life, posted on social media on January 12 to honor his former coach.
Courbis had guided Zidane during his early years at Girondins de Bordeaux (1992–1994), recognizing his exceptional talent, vision, and intelligence on the field.
In his message, Zidane wrote that he was “sad, very moved,” praising Courbis as a deeply meaningful figure both professionally and personally, and extended his condolences to Courbis’ family.
Courbis, a former player and three-time French champion, went on to coach many future football stars like David Ginola and Claude Makélélé, before becoming a popular sports consultant in media outlets such as RMC.
His passing prompted widespread tributes across the football world.
