Evening News Update Friday 22 February

Three men have been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the death of an elderly man in Marseille. Eugene Griot, who was 80 years old, died after he was robbed while walking down a street in the 11th arrondissement of Marseille in August 2016.

A man has died after falling from a building in Cannes today.  The 55 year old had been working at an apartment block on the avenue du Roi Albert 1er when he fell from the 7th floor of the 12 storey building.

An Afghan national who lives in Italy has been sentenced to 2 years in prison by the criminal court in Nice.  He was arrested near Menton earlier this week reportedly attempting to bring at least five Afghan and Pakistan nationals across the border.

A 23 year old motorcyclist who was the victim of a road accident on Wednesday evening in Vidauban, in the Var has died from his injuries. According to a police investigation, he was thrown from his bike onto a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction after hitting the back of a car.

A 13 year old skier has been airlifted to hospital after a fall in the Allos ski resort this morning.  She reportedly suffered trauma to the head and was taken to the hospital in Digne-les-Bains by helicopter. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated.

A  hiker has been found alive and well after falling into a crevasse in a national park about 50km north-east of Avignon. Fortunately, the 53 year old man was able to use his mobile phone and alerted the authorities who used mountain rescue equipment to reach him.

Pollen levels in the Alpes Maritimes and the Var are currently at very high levels. According to the French national aerobiological surveillance network, the two departments are in a "red" zone. The network said that the risk of pollen from cypress trees in particular will remain at its maximum level for the next few days and the concentrations of pollen are expected to remain high for the next few weeks. 

 

BUSINESS


BMW and Daimler have unveiled a joint venture to invest in new-generation services such as driverless vehicles, ride-hailing and parking services. The companies are investing €1bn in the project, which will also look into pay-per-use car schemes.

A survey by the Munich-based Ifo economic institute has found that the business climate index in Germany is at its lowest level since 2014. It means that business sentiment has fallen for the sixth consecutive month.

US food company Kraft Heinz has revealed that it received a subpoena from the US regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission, about its accounting policies.

More trade talks are taking place between the US and China today. Remarks by President Trump that he wants the US to become a technology leader through competition rather than by blocking others have been interpreted as taking a softer stance toward China's Huawei. China and the US are attempting to hammer out a deal before a looming 1 March deadline.

 

SPORT

 

Rugby Union.. The third round of the Six Nations is being played this weekend with the big match at Cardiff tomorrow between Wales and England in what could be the Championship decider. The match starts at 5.45 French time tomorrow afternoon. Also tomorrow France host Scotland at 3.15 and on Sunday Italy play Ireland.

Olympics… The International Olympic Committee has suspended applications from India to host future events after two Pakistan athletes were denied visas to compete in the country. Two shooters were denied entry for a World Cup event in New Delhi. It comes after an attack by a Pakistan-based militant group in the disputed region of Kashmir that killed at least 40 paramilitary police.

Football… Fifa have banned Chelsea from signing players in the next two transfer windows for breaching rules in relation to youth players. Chelsea have said they will appeal against the decision. The club has also been fined £460,000, while the Football Association has been fined £390,000.

In the Europa League last-16 draw, as far as UK teams are concerned, it’s Chelsea v Dynamo Kiev and Arsenal v Rennes. Arsenal and Chelsea will both play at home in the first leg on 7 March with the return games a week later.

In the English Premier League this weekend, there are two games tonight with Cardiff playing Watford and West Ham against Fulham. On Saturday Burnley play Spurs. Bournemouth host Wolves. Newcastle play Huddersfield and Leicester play Crystal Palace. On Sunday Arsenal play Southampton and Manchester United host Liverpool. It’s also the League Cup Final on Sunday between Manchester City and Chelsea. Kick off is at 5.30 French time.
